How we do math. Part 3: Supplies

MATH SUPPLIES – MAKING, BUYING, STORING

I’ve made most everything we’ve needed for the K and 2nd grade curricula we use. I keep any made supplies in a math bin in the overhead cabinets above our couch. I pull out what I need for the next day’s lesson and store it in the pocket sheet protector so the next day is ready to go. I keep the sheet protectors and notebooks in our stack of daily school stuff next to the math bin.

For money, I’ve been keeping the change in our pencil jar under all the pencils. First, it weighs down the mug and keeps it from toppling as easily, and two, change is bulky so having it in a cup and easy to pour out when needed has been really helpful.

The only thing I haven’t been able to make or substitute so far this year is linking cubes. I started using legos, but we didn’t have 100 one-bricks. I tried just making paper sticks and squares, but I really felt like my Kindergartner needed to feel and see the cubes building and comparing and breaking towers to solidify number concepts. So I bought a set of Unifix Cubes (100 count) (click the link to buy on Amazon – I get a little kickback!) and have used them repeatedly in both the K and 2nd grade lessons.

For a timer for fluency practice, I use my phone app or the google timer (just google ‘timer 1 minute’ or however long you need).

For ‘random number cubes’ i.e. dice, I just stole a few from our family games. Almost everything else I’ve been able to make with index cards, markers, scissors and occasional craft supplies like straws, rubber bands, cardboard, pony beads, and pipe cleaners (to make a Rekenrek, pictured below).
